The New England AAPOR Student Paper Competition is to encourage student participation in the chapter and to honor the best scholarly research by New England area students.
Papers for the 2025 competition are due: December 31, 2024.
To be eligible for the award, students must submit a full paper for review by the NEAAPOR Executive Council or Paper Award Committee.
a) Criteria: NEAAPOR welcomes papers in any field related to the study of public opinion, broadly defined, including research on (a) theoretical issues in the formation and change of public opinion, (b) the theory and methods of survey or market research, and (c) the use of statistical techniques in the design, adjustment, or analysis of survey data. Papers are expected to be the length of typical journal manuscripts (i.e., approximately 15 to 25 pages), and will be judged based on the quality of research design, originality, significance, organization, and presentation.
The award committee will consider all papers that relate to the study of public opinion, whether they focus on theory, substantive findings, research methods, and/or statistical techniques used in such research. Students are limited to one submission each as the primary author.
b) Eligibility: The competition is open to all current graduate and undergraduate students, and to those who have received their degree within the last calendar year. Therefore, submitted work may be from the current or previous academic year. Faculty co-authors are acceptable, with the stipulation that an eligible student must be first author. Eligibility is limited to students attending or graduated from an accredited college or university in the New England region, or to students whose primary residence is in one of those areas. Membership in NEAAPOR is not required. Submitted papers may not have been published or presented elsewhere. At least one student author is expected to be available to present their paper at the 80th Annual AAPOR Conference on May 14-16, 2025. It is being held in-person this year in St. Louis, MO.
c) Award: The author(s) of the winning paper will be expected to present their research with a guaranteed spot on the Conference Program at the 80th Annual AAPOR National Conference (May 14-16, 2025). New England AAPOR will pay for the winning students’ conference registration, airfare and hotel (up to $750 total). For multiple student authors on a winning paper, the travel award can be divided among the eligible authors.
d) Award Committee: The winning paper and honorable mentions will be selected by a review committee composed of this year and next year’s NEAAPOR executive council members and NEAAPOR member volunteers.
e) Submission: Please send your paper via e-mail to Brian Robertson. brianr@marketdecisions.com.The winner will be announced in January.
